Document Summary

The new age movement is the ultimate religion a la carte. Take what you like, reject whatever you don"t like, and change your mind as much or as often as you want. We need to be careful, however, not to confuse the specific new age movement with the category of all new religions- a number of which are listed in the textbook chapter. New age movement represents only one specific category of many "new religions. " Also, religions such as wicca are classified as new religions, but not as new age. New age thinking borrows from all available religious traditions to the degree that elements from them can be made interesting to the american consumer. All of the original traditions get reinterpreted, whether jewish, christian, hindu, buddhist, or whatever else. None of the ideas keeps its original context in a system that works together around a core of certain dogmas which distinguish the original religions from one another.
