Document Summary

Humoral immune responses activation of b cells & antibody production. Require helper (cd4) t cells for b cell activation. Many classes of antibodies can be produced. Activation of b lymphocytes: clonal expansion, differentiation. What direction differentiation takes is dependent on the properties of the antigen. Subsets of b cells: respond preferentially to protein and non-protein antigen, follicular b cells. Give rise to longest-lived plasma cells: marginal zone b cells & b1 b-cells. Mainly an igm response with long-lived plasma cells. Affinity refers to the strength of the binding between an antibody and an antigen. B lymphocyte activation: b lymphocytes are initially stimulated by antigen, but there must also be a co-receptor molecule activation and in the case of protein antigens, signals from helper t lymphocytes. All of this is required for sufficient activation of na ve b lymphocytes: step 1 binding and crosslinking of antibody molecules on mature na ve b cells (bcr) by repetitive epitopes on antigen.
