Human immune system can control re-awakened hiv, suggesting cure is possible. Human immune system can handle large bursts of hiv activity possible to cure hiv with a kick & kill strategy. Kick & kill strategy stimulate immune system with vaccine. Re-awakens dormant hiv hiding in white blood cells kick . Boosted immune system can identify & kill them study : 59 year old man who was an elite controller . Elite controllers make up 0. 3$ of hiv patients. Can go a lot longer without treatment since the immune system is more active against hiv. Patient had hiv & myeloma (bone marrow cancer) Patient had bone marrow removed & replaced using stem cells. Immune system was impaired when bone marrow was removed. Caused level of virus to increase from fewer than 50 copies per ml to 28,000 copies per ml. Immune function returned about 2 weeks after the transplant. Levels of hiv in bloodstream rapidly fell.
