Psychology as a science people are skeptical that psychology is really a science. Psychological science is useful creating interventions that help people live better lives. Elizabeth loftus - conducted research demonstrating the limits and unreliability of eyewitness testimony and memory. Deceptions - some researchers need to deceive participants. Professor elizabeth dunn (2008) - experiment on spending and happiness independent variable - variable that will be manipulated dependent variable - measured and observed random assignment - receiving conditions by random chance. Confounds - things that can undermine your ability to dray casual inferences. To prevent these confounds - double-blind procedure neither participant nor the experimenter knows which condition that participant is in. Correlational designs when scientist do not intervene or change behavior but passively observe positive correlation - line on graph goes up negative correlation - line on graph goes down. Problems with the correlation correlation does not mean causation - more observations and experiments are needed.
