Psyc 1 textbook notes module 43: social influence. Helps us to empathize: feel what others are feeling. Conformity: adjusting behavior/thinking to coincide with a group standard. In a group with at least three people. Normative social influence: influence from a person"s desire to gain approval/avoid disapproval. Social norms: understood rules for accepted and expected behavior. Informational social influence: influence from one"s willingness to accept others" opinions about reality. Cognitive dissonance: we act to reduce the discomfort (dissonance) we feel when two of our thoughts (cognitions) are inconsistent. Obedience highest when: person giving orders close at hand, perceived as legitimate authority, authority figure supported by prestigious institution, victim depersonalized/at a distance, no role models for defiance. Social facilitation: improved performance on a simple/well-learned task in the presence of others. When working on a hard task, people perform worse when observes/others working on same task are present. Presence of others sometimes helps, sometimes hinders performance: presence strengthens our most likely response.
