Psychological disorder- psychological dysfunction associated with distress or impairment in functioning that is not a typical or culturally expected response: psychological dysfunction- breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning. Phobia- psychological disorder characterized by marked and persistent fear of an object or situation. Abnormal behavior- actions that are unexpected and often evaluated negatively because they differ from typical or usual behavior. Diagnose people based on how well they match the prototype of a disorder, which is outlined as diagnostic criteria in the dsm. Presenting problem- original complaint course- pattern of development and change in disorder over time. Prognosis- predicted development of a disorder over time etiology- cause or source of disorder: can infer from which treatments work. Biological tradition- disorders are biologically caused: humor imbalance, wandering uterus , syphilis causing general paralysis, ect and insulin shock therapy, drugs, focus on diagnosis, symptoms, and study of brain, but less emphasis on treatment.
