10. 1 metabolism: important principles and concepts: metabolism is central to all life. Chem rxns that occur in cells are organized into pathways; product of 1 rxn is the substrate for the next rxn in the pathway. Cells carry out 3 major types of work. Chem work involves synthesis of complex bio molecules from much simpler precursors; energy is needed to increase molecular complexity of a cell transport work requires energy to take up nutrients, eliminate wastes, and maintain ion balances. Energy input is needed bc molecules and ions often must be transported across cell membranes against an electrochemical gradient the 3rd type of work is mechanical work. Energy is required for cell motility and the movement of structures within cells, such as partitioning chromosomes during cell division. Energy may be defined most simply as the capacity to do work. Science of thermodynamics analyzes energy changes in a collection of matter called a system.
