Make use of strategies habitual, flexible, and automatic. Stages of srsd (6) - meant to be recursive (can be reordered, revisited, looped, combined, etc. ) Stage 1: developing and activating background knowledge. Define the skills needed to perform a strategy. Break down task into knowledge needed to perform the strategy. Use 2 columns - steps and skills. Assess child"s knowledge/ability to perform those skills. Have students believe that the strategy will help them perform better. Establish concern for current level of performance and explain benefits of using strategies. Introduce students to steps of strategy - how and where it is useful. Show thought processes used to employ strategies. Commit the steps of the strategy to memory. Students need to know and understand the steps in the process. Teacher and students work together to practice using the strategy. Scaffolding - shift responsibility to student gradually. Check for understanding and provide corrective feedback. Content scaffolding - easy level, interests, easy to difficult.
