Numerical analysis of people"s responses, specific characteristics. Findings may often be generalized population. Studies individuals, small groups of people who seek help from mental health professionals & other social scientists. Helps people who are experiencing family problems. Systematic data collection b systematically observing people in natural surroundings. Data may be converted quantitative summaries. May be expensive or inexpensive depending on project"s scope, location. How society"s interdependent parts work together ensure its survival. Look at how families contribute to society"s stability: Relationships between family members & between families and other institutions (education, religion). Roles are functional create order, stability, harmony. Interference with these roles dysfunctional because it jeopardizes smooth functioning. Family affects, is affected by, is interrelated to other institutions: Too conservative: emphasizes on stability & ignores social change. Should not expect males to be instrumental & females to be expressive. Does not discuss how families interact on a daily basis (only explains macro-level).
