Global climate change due to enhancement of greenhouse effect. Much of the carbon dioxide released by fossil fuel burning has been absorbed by oceans-> reacts to form weak acid -> waters still weakly alkaline, acidity is rising. Bc acidity rising too fast for organisms to adapt, many at risk for extinction. Species especially at risk are those that create hard parts (skeletons, shells, and other structural materials) of calcium carbonate. Both caused by large quantities of carbon dioxide into atmosphere (primarily fossil fuel burning) Bathymetric: depict depth of ocean below sea level. Chronometer: longitude could not be measured accurately until this was invented. Chemosynthesis: process by which simple chemical compounds are made into organic compounds of living organisms. Synthesize organic compounds, using energy derived from the oxidation of organic or inorganic materials without the aid of light. Used in isolated environments such as hydrothermal vents and deep within. Earth"s crusts, these environments contain no free oxygen, extreme temps and pressure.
