Big 5: openness to experience- imaginative vs. down-to-earth. Independent vs. conforming: conscientiousness- organized vs. disorganized. careful vs. careless. Self- disciplined vs. weak-willed: extraversion- social vs. retiring. Affectionate vs. reserved: agreeableness- softhearted vs. ruthless. Helpful vs. uncooperative: neuroticism- worried vs. calm. Personality trait- a pattern of thought, emotion, and behaviors that is relatively consistent over time and across situations. Identical twins probed much more similar traits than fraternal twins. Genetic influence accounts for 40-60% for all of our personality traits. Genetic basis of traits is the same against all cultures. Two children that are not biologically related are raised in the same household as adopted siblings, those two children tend to be no more alike in personality than two random strangers off the street. Small correlations found between biological siblings or between children and their biological parents. Temperaments- biologically based tendencies to feel or act in certain ways.
