PSYC314 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Corpus Callosum, Visual Cortex, Nostril
Document Summary
Chapter 1 highlights (aka stuff i don"t know) Consciousness: being aware of and being able to tell others about our thoughts, perceptions, memories, and feelings: perhaps evolution of communication gave rise to consciousness. Blind sight: caused by brain damage; symptoms indicate that perceptions do not need to enter consciousness in order to affect behavior: mammalian system is responsible for our ability to perceive the world around us. Guiding hand motions to an unseen object: suggests consciousness is not a general property of all parts of the brain. You are still seeing/perceiving but you are not conscious of it. They are only speaking with the left hemisphere. Left hand has a mind of it"s own example: left hand puts down the book the left brain is reading because it is controlled by the right brain which is bored of holding the book. Can smell through left nostril because it is received in the left brain.
