PSYC340 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4-7: Working Memory, Prosopagnosia, Iconic Memory
Document Summary
Recognition: some early considerations: can recognize objects even when information is partial, variations in the stimulus input provide our first indication that object recognition involves some complexity, processes directly shaped by the stimulus are bottom-up processes. However, recognition is also influenced by knowledge and expectations which are top-down processes. The importance of features: recognition begins with the identification of visual features in the input pattern - the vertical lines, curves, diagonals, etc. Familiarity - how frequent certain words are. Recency of view - view a word then view it again a little later, the word will be recognized more readily the second time. Words are easier to perceive than isolated letters: degree of wellformedness. How well a letter sequence conforms to the usual spelling patterns: making errors. Strong tendency to misread less-common letter sequences as if they were more-common patterns. Feature nets and word recognition: the design of a feature net. Feature detectors > letter detectors > word detector.
