The Promise of Feminist Education
• More inclusive and socially just forms of knowledge and support for teachers
• Emphasizes importance of student voice / experience and encourages personal and social change
• "All knowledge is ideological" -- always associated with history and politics
• Feminist knowledge -- emphasizes that science is a human product (not unbiased or value free)
Activism
• Encouraged to internalize more private constraints concerning the body and sexuality (women in
power)
• Global capitalism -- allowed privileged to lead lives of security
o Consequences for humanity
• Key issues addressed
o Affordable higher education
• More than half of all bachelors degrees are now earned by women
o Preparation for work
• U.S. -- largest gap between rich and poor and is increasing
o Least mobile among postindustrial societies
o 20 million people live in extreme poverty
o 1 in 5 children go to bed hungry
• Backlash -- done by groups seeking to prevent what they perceive as a loss of power and influence
o Multi - issue
o Multi - strategic
• Liberal feminism -- worked within system and advocated for change from within
• Radical feminism -- attempted to transform the system instead of adapting to current system
o Differences in strategy can be divisive
o But can also be source of strength (more points of view, etc.)
• INCREASING WOMEN'S PARTICIPATION AND LEADERSHIP DOES NOT IMPLY A MORE EGALITARIAN
OR FEMINIST FUTURE.
• Platform for action
o Worked to call for concrete action involving the human rights of women as part of universal
human rights
Future Visions
• Anticipate future based on how we make sense of present and how we understand the past
• In the future
o Whites will no longer be a majority
o The number of aged people will increase due to better nutrition and healthcare
• Many women are primary bread winners
• Things we need to do
o Set feminist priorities and keep them straight
• Develop resilience
o Live in and envision a society that balances personal freedom and identity with public and
collective responsibility
