Health: a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Leading causes of death in us in 1900: cardiovascular disease, influenza and pneumonia, tuberculosis, gastritis, accidents. Leading causes of death in 2009: heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, accidents; less infectious diseases. Persistent uncontrollable and unpredictable stress can create allostatic load (physiological arousal that results from a chronic stressor when it lasts over a period of time) Minorities face racism, discrimination (usually have higher allostatic load) Low ses probably also have high allostatic load face more worry and have less leisure time. A considerable number of studies have shown that positive emotions influence physiological functioning. The mind and the body affect each other reciprocally. Health psychology: aka behavioral medicine, a field that explores how biological, psychological, and social/environmental factors interact to influence physical health. Biological factors such as genetic makeup, age, and gender have a major influence on susceptibility to disease.
