Stress amount of force divided by the area where the force is applied. Compression when stress pushes in on a rock. In shallow levels of crust, it can cause fracture and slipping. Tension when stress is directed outward. Can help form fractures that help the rock stretch as it is pulled apart and can cause slipping. Vein fracture where luids can deposit minerals. Shear when stress is applied on the edge of a rock in opposite direcions. Usually forms a fault in shallow crust and cause rocks to move past one.
