Diathesis stress models help to explain the phenomenon of a person already having a predisposition for a specific mental disorder and then experiencing stress that perpetuates that disorder further. These models have been much less useful in the past than they are today. Diathesis stress models have seen great use in modern times. However, a diathesis and stressor can become difficult to disentangle as to which was the primal cause and sometimes a diathesis is also a stressor, making the process of determining causal factors of mental illnesses even more challenging.
