Document Summary
Overview of neurodevelopmental disorders: change over time. The brain changes significantly for several years after birth: critical developments in social, emotional, cognitive, and other important competency areas, changes/skills follow a pattern. First identified as different around age 3-4: active, mischievous, slow to toilet train, oppositional. In odd: often loses temper, argues with adults, deliberately annoys people, touchy and easily annoyed by others, often spiteful and vindictive. Causes: relatives of children with adhd are more likely to have adhd themselves. Poor inhibitory control: the ability to stop responding to a task when signaled: common in children with adhd and unaffected family members, possible endophenotype. There may be a small but measurable impact of artificial food colors and additives on the behavior of young children: negative responses by parents, teachers, and peers low self-esteem difficulty making friends. Set behavior goals with reinforcements and punishments: amount of time the child remains seated, number of math papers completed, appropriate play with peers.
