Document Summary

Chapter 3. 4 fate of the rna primary transcript. When rna transcript from the single strand dna template, it is called the primary. Transcript: it contains the information needed o produce protein in corresponding to the gene. Messenger rna (mrna) is the actual coding that direct protein synthesis by combining with the ribosome. Transcription takes place in the nucleus while translation takes place in the cytoplasm. The primary transcript goes through rna processing before it becomes mrna. Steps of rna processing: the 5" end is added with a 5"cap called 7-methylguanosine by a 5"-5" linkage. This allows ribosome to recognize mrna during translation. Without it, ribosome will not attach to the mrna and translation will not occur: polyadenylation the addition of 250 consecutive a-bearing ribonucleotides to the 3"end known as the poly(a) tail. It plays a role in transcription termination as well as exporting the mrna to the cytoplasm of the cell.
