Polysomnography: sleep study involving series of tests performed during sleep: eog records eye movements, emg measures skeletal/muscular movements. Nrem sleep: state of sleep characterized by 3 stages, ranging from light dozing to deep sleep: majority of your sleep time spent here aka quiet sleep. Sleep hormones accumulate in brain and spinal cord, brain patterns activated for increasingly longer and longer while you"re awake: after prolonged activity, brain neurons trigger release of 5 hormones related to sleep. People who don"t pass through all stages of sleep at least once may wake up feeling tired, even though sleep for hours. Beta waves -> relax alpha waves -> relax more theta waves -> transition to stages of sleep. 1st few minutes drift off to sleep but not fully awake or asleep: someone talk to you, may not realize you were sleeping, aka light sleep. Hypnogogic hallucination: vivid, usually visual, mental images occurring while falling asleep: brief sensory misperception; most common is falling.
