Document Summary

Blending theory of inheritance = belief that inheritance worked like mixing fluids/ paint, but there were exceptions. > eg. tall parent + short parents = middle height child. > exceptions eg. average height parents gave birth to tall children. Mendel observed the transmission of traits from parent to offspring after hybridization among different varieties of pea plants, observed that 3 purple flowered plants for every 1 white flowered plant. Genes= mendel"s particles that are passed intact from one generation to another. Somatic cells = non-sex cells, has 2 copy of gene. Gametes= sex cells (eggs, sperm), has 1 copy of gene. Mendel"s conclusions: genes behave like particles that don"t blend together, 1 allele = dominant to the other, this helped plain lack of blending in first gen hybrids, and the ratio of 3:1 of purple to white flowered plants. Mendel got it right, because traits studied were controlled by single genes.
