Regulation of trnascription depends on 2 types of protein-dna interactions. Dna promoter = protein that determines where transcription starts, rna polymerase binds to this site -> transcription can start a few bases from promoter. To determine whether promoter driven transcription occurs, dna segments near promoter that are binding sites for sequence specific regulatory proteins = activators and repressors. > in bacteria, binding sites for repressors = operators.
