Impacts and defines the relationship between two individuals. Interactions vary by who your partner is; colleague, friend, sibling, teacher, etc. The way you communicate/interact influences the kind of relationship you and the other person develop. Ranges from relatively impersonal to highly personal. People act in roles on the impersonal spectrum. Server treats customer as one of many rather than a unique individual and vice versa. On the personal spectrum, father and son would treat one another as unique individuals. Server and customer interact based on rules of society. Father and son have personally established rules. The messages exchanged between server and customer are highly impersonal with no emotional content.
