CMN 10Y Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Implicature, Social Exchange Theory, Social Penetration Theory
Document Summary
Communicating a lot doesn"t mean you can communicate well. Personal success and happiness depend on effective communicator. Practical benefits: increase effectiveness in personal, social, and professional life. Interpersonal communication: verbal and nonverbal interaction between two (or sometimes more than two) interdependent people. What one person does, has an impact on another person. Impersonal communication exists on a continuum: impersonal to very personal, taxi driver and passenger > doctor > friends > lovers. Taxi driver treats passenger as any type of person, not as a unique individual (act on role society established) Interpersonal messages that you produce are the result of choices we make. Interpersonal communication is inevitable and irreversible: we"re communicating even if we think we aren"t. Relationships: contact, involvement, intimacy, deterioration, repair, and dissolution. Involvement: testing, make sure that person is reasonable. Stay longer, or exit, or go back to contact stage. Share less of your free time (awkward silence, lack of psychological contact)
