Document Summary

Long term memory (ltm)- responsible for storing information for long periods of time. Chapter 6 notes: information archive, recent memories tend to be more detailed, large capacity. Ltm is active during conversation to retrieve the meaning of words. Serial position curve- memory is better for the words at the beginning/end of a list than in the middle. Primacy effect- more likely to remember words at the beginning of a sequence: may have had more time to rehearse and send to ltm. Recency effect- better memory for stimuli presented at the end of a sequence: words are still in stm. Coding- form in which stimuli are represented: physiological approach is based on neuron firing, mental approach is based on representation in the mind. Visual coding- mental coding using visual images. Release from proactive interference- when memory improves because proactive interference ends due to a category switch. Recognition memory- identification of a previously encountered stimulus.
