Document Summary

40. 2 feedback control maintains the internal environment in many animals. 45. 1 hormones and other signaling molecules bind to target receptors, triggering specific response pathways. In paracrine signaling, target cells lie near the secreting cell. In autocrine signaling, the secreting cells themselves are the target cells: both paracrine and autocrine signaling play a role in blood pressure regulation, nervous system function, and reproduction, prostaglandins are in the prostate gland and contribute to semen. In females, the prostaglandins introduced in semen stimulate smooth muscles of the uterine wall to contract, helping the sperm reach the egg. In childbirth, prostaglandins produced by the placenta cause the uterine muscles to become more excitable, helping to induce labor: prostaglandins act in the immune system too; promotes inflammation and sensation of pain in response to injury. Also regulates aggregation of platelets: synaptic and neuroendocrine signaling. In synaptic signaling, neurons for specialized junctions called synapses with target cells.
