Instrumental aggression: intention to hurt the other person, but hurting takes places as a means to some goal other than causing pain. The evolutionary view: evolutionary psychologists argue that physical aggression is genetically programmed into men because it enables them to defend their group and perpetuate their genes, male aggressiveness starts in childhood. It is commonly believed that the hormone that fuels male aggression is testosterone (high proportion in males: studies show correlation in casualties, testosterone can increase aggression or aggression can increase testosterone. Culture and aggression: most social psychs believe that aggression is an optional strategy, we humans are born with the capacity for aggressive behavior but the functions of using it are dependent on circumstances and culture. They were initially peaceful and became aggressive not because of some innate aggressive impulse, but came about because of a social change: aggression over time has general gone down as it is seen as not productive in society.
