In african pentecostalism, ogbu kalu gives an overview of the pentecostal movement in. He focuses on the movement"s origins and growth, as well as the roles of women, approaches to poverty alleviation, and new forms of mission work. Chapter 5 opens up with an introduction summarizing the original charismatic stirrings of the pentecostal movement in africa (88). From there, kalu explains the evolution into the student-lead movements of the late 1960"s that coincided with the nigerian civil war (90). He explains why each of these movements were needed and how they set the groundwork for modern pentecostal movements. In chapter 7, kalu writes about the purposeful changes the modern pentecostal church has implemented to distinguish itself from traditional mission churches (126). Chapter 8 shifts focus from the historiography of the church to more specific issues within the movement. Kalu expands upon the gender roles found in the pentecostal church and how those dynamics impact feminism in the church (154).
