Thesis: in the essay, maffley-kipp is trying to differentiate between the importance of sincerity, primarily of the prophet joseph smith, and the faith mormonism. His second point is to address the issue that even though in most settings sincerity is a positive thing, in the case of the upbringing of mormonism sincerity may not have been a helpful or good thing. Maffley-kipp"s last focus is to paint mormonism in a new light. Essentially, he wants to take away from the focus of smith and draw more focus to mormonism as a faith. Argument: the author starts his exploration on the importance of sincerity by addressing a lot of the criticism that mormonism is always hit with. The problem that the author faces, is trying to explain why joseph"s insincerity is unattached to the faith and that maybe, it might have actually been a good thing.
