Human behavior is based on biology and instincts. Ecological factors modify the techno-economic base of simple societies. Support of non productive youth and elderly. No real ruler or hierarchy (sometimes a headman, but with little power) Individual acquisition of surplus led to the beginning of inequality. Sharing only within kin groups, but no one is ever deprived of sustenance or access to means of production. Cultivation = longer work, but more yields. Led to a population explosion due to it leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. The only one where women have ever really had more. Is proportional to the amount of control a group has over the means/fruits of production. Women"s relative economic power is the main determinant of the relative equality of the sexes in a given group. Women supply much more to their family"s subsistence than people think. Average of 44% of food supply worldwide. 2% of societies = women contribute nothing.
