Unit vii reading notes: classical mythology: myths of the olympians - the male deities. Zeus ruled the family and all humankind. Underworld family was like a mirror image of the upper. Higher knowledge was open only to males in ancient greece. Apollo guided them, often through the mouth of a woman. Historical origin and meaning of his name is unknown. With their mother leto, apollo and artemis formed a sort of divine family. In origin, they had nothing to do with one another. Apollo is sometimes called a sun-god, but in origin, had no connection to the sun. Represented as an archer-god, although he is not a god of hunters. Artemis was thought to represent the dark and the moon his arrows are the shafts of disease the birth of apollo on delos. One of the longest homeric hymns is dedicated to apollo. Composed of two songs that were once separate.
