BIOL 101 Chapter 15: BIO 101 CHAPTER 15 TEXTBOOK NOTES
Document Summary
Biotechnology can be defined as the use of technology to control biological process as a means of meeting societal needs. For examples: controlling the way cell copies its dna every time it divides. Transgenic biotechnology- the splicing of dna from one species into another. Reproductive cloning- the production of mammals through cloning. Cell reprogramming- the production of needed cell types through the reprogramming of genomes. Forensic biotechnology- the use of biotechnology to establish identities of criminals, crimes, victims and so one. In the mid- 1980s produced synthetic hgh (human growth hormone). Using collections of human cells, the gene for hgh was snipped out of the human genome and inserted into the escherichia coli bacterium. Hgh gene began transcribing and then translating this gene, which turned into small quantities of hgh proteins. Definition: an organism whose genome has stably incorporated one or more genes from another species.
