PSYC 460 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Fixed Action Pattern, Classical Conditioning, Startle Response
Document Summary
I. e. a sneeze produced by a speck of dust. Elicit means to draw out or bring forth . Elicited behavior = a behavior that is drawn out by a preceding stimulus. Reflex = a simple, automatic response to a stimulus; the relationship between such a response and the stimulus that elicits it. Startle response = a defensive reaction to a sudden, unexpected stimulus; involves automatic tightening of skeletal muscles as well as various hormonal/visceral changes. Orienting response = automatically position ourselves to facilitate attending to a stimulus; can involve a relatively major body movement. Flexion response = automatically jerking our hand/foot away from a hot/sharp object we inadvertently contacted. Reflex arc = a neural structure underlying some reflexes that consist of a sensory neuron, an interneuron, and a motor neuron. I. e. spiders building webs, ducks flying in a v shape. A specific stimulus sets it in motion, called a sign stimulus/releaser.
