EHR523 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Neoplasm, Angiogenesis, Blood Vessel
Document Summary
Week 1: cancer basics & cancer incidence, mortality and survival. Causes of mutations: genetic changes that cause tumours may be due to: Tumour growth phase 2: promotion: proliferation: increase in number of mutated daughter cells due to increased susceptibility to various promoters (e. g. growth factors, hormones etc), angiogenesis: tumour to increases in size it must develop it"s own blood supply. Invasion: as the tumour continues to grow it may start to invade surrounding tissues: metastasis: occurs when tumour invades a blood vessel or lymphatic system and migrates to a different site to form a distant tumour. Solid cancers are classified by the location of tumour origin: Carcinoma: originates in the skin or epithelial cells of organs. Sarcoma: originates in the cells of connective and supporting tissues. Liquid cancers begin in lymphatic or blood-forming tissues: Lymphoma: originates in the lymphatic system cells. Invades organ essential for life (impairs function and/or chemical balance).
