Super ego: demands of the social world. Internalised watchman that represents internalised authority gures (parents etc) Mostly punitive-internal source of self monitoring and punishment (guilt) Punishment = potential loss of parental love and care (danger) It becomes internalised, monitoring and punishing the desire and thoughts. Guilty for what we want to do before we even do it. Intervene between impulse and action, thought and feeling. Most highly organised part of personality (mostly unconscious) Also includes ego ideal , goals, morality, aspirations, etc conscious. Opposed to demands of id, and punishing toward ego. Forms as during dissolution of oedipal complex (phallic stage) Represents internalisation of paternal authority and punishment. Always archaic (since they derive from childhood) Children had a rich erotic life through sexual grati cation. Oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latent stage, genital stage. The oedipal complex: child loves mother, wants to get dad out of the picture.
