Teaching and Learning Strategies
Values Continuum
This strategy will help students to:
- Identify and clarify attitudes about issues
- Consider others’ thoughts and attitudes.
Brief description of the strategy
- 3 signs with opposing responses
For example
Yes/No/Maybe
Safe/Unsafe
Agree/Disagree
Create the answers students agree with the most
- Stand at the sign where you agree with when teacher asks a question
- Students then move to the sign they agree with
Name of the activity
Considering Passive Smoking p63
Year group & Focus Area
Year 3 Alcohol & Other Drugs
Discuss this strategies application How and when would you use it?
How
Questions to ask students during the Strategy:
Why would someone place themselves in that position on the continuum?
What experiences would have brought them to that conclusion?
Would they feel differently if they had more information about this?
Was it easy to choose the position on the continuum? Why or why not?
When
- I would use this strategy on a topic that holds many different opinions
Teach children to respect the values and beliefs of others
Consider others’ thoughts and attitudes
Different Strategies:
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
Students may use a ‘thumbs up’ gesture to suggest ‘agree’; a ‘thumbs down’ gesture to suggest
‘disagree’ and a ‘flat palm’ gesture to suggest ‘unsure’
Ruler Continuum
Students attach a smiley face to one end of their ruler and a frowning face to the other end of
their ruler. Presuming the smiley face suggests ‘agree’ and the frowning face suggests
‘disagree’
Heads and Tails
Students indicate their opinion by placing their hands on their head (agree), bottom (disagree)
and hips (unsure). Alternatively hands on their head can indicate (true or yes), bottom (false
or no) and hips (unsure or maybe)

Values Voting
This strategy will help students to:
- Identify and clarify attitudes about issues
- Consider others’ thoughts and attitude.
Brief Description of the Strategy
- Can be conducted at the beginning to gain students first thoughts, and at the end to observe developing
ideas
- People’s opinions - Therefore we need an atmosphere of respect - encourage mutual respect
- Good way of fostering debate/discussion
Name of the Activity
Identifying Your Attitudes (p 177)
Year group & Focus Area
Year 4 Safety
What are some variations for this strategy?
- Dot voting
Devise a health or safety question or statement and a set of responses for students to consider. Write
each response on a large sheet of paper. Give students two sticky dots each to place on the
response or responses that resound more strongly with their attitudes and values. As a class discuss
the voting responses.
- Fist of five
Students consider a statement and then indicate their feeling or opinion by using their hand. A fist
indicates ‘strongly disagree’ and proceeds up to five fingers for ‘strongly agree’.
Why is it important to debrief after a values learning experience?
- We need to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and encourage different opinions, beliefs and
attitudes toward different topics/discussions
What is the role of the teacher in a Values learning experience and why is it so important?
- As a teacher we need to create a safe environment where children can feel accepted and respected
Question Partners
This strategy will help students to:
- Recall prior knowledge and increase understanding of a health or safety issue
- Identify questions and future learning needs.
