Lecture 11: emotional deception, like other measures of emotional competence, is positive associated with social skills. I. e. , better liars are more popular: children and adults appear to regularly practice emotional deception; degree varies by individual, age, and culture. Peers: peers are two or more people who are social equals and operating at similar levels of behavioral complexity, peer contact increases over the course of childhood while adult contact decreases. Peer benefits: peers increase sociability, the willingness to interact with others and seek their attention/approval, development of sociability begins slowly, then increases during the early years of development. Sociability: sociability in the preschool years (parten, 1932, nonsocial activity, onlooker play, parallel play, associative play, cooperative play, middle childhood and adolescence, games with rules, peer groups emerge. 2: adolescent cliques & crowds begin at around ages 12-14. Studying peer acceptance: peer acceptance measured using sociometric techniques. Usually correspond to teacher assessments: children can be classified based on nominations.
