BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, Frontal Lobe, Aibo
Document Summary
Part 2: neurobiology of anxiety, networks underlying behavior, brain structures involved in anxiety, serotonin system & receptors. Specific cause of anxiety is not well understood. Some studies show conflicting information (eg: high vs low serotonin: heredity plays a role in predicting some types of anxiety (eg: sad) Example 1 of functional specificity: phineas gage (~1850): railroad worker involved in accident in which a metal rod was driven through his head, destroying the majority of his frontal lobe. Remarkably he survived the injury however post accident there were dramatic changes to personality. He became impulsive, childish, unable to stick to plans, used the grossest profanity . Appeared to be a totally different individual, lost his job and friends. Note that general intelligence and memory did not seem to be impaired. Thought to be the first well documented case of functional specificity of the brain. Example 2 of functional specificity: patient hm (modern day): henry molaison.
