Kaposi"s sarcoma (rare cancer; occurs in older men) Diagnosed in 26 homosexual men aged 26-51 years over 30 months (~ january 1979 june 1981) 20 cases in ny city; 7 cases in california. Comparison: in 1970-79: no kaposi"s sarcoma in men under 50 at bellevue hospital, 3 cases in men under 50 at ny univ hospital in 1961-79. Other symptoms: skin lesions, perirectal abscess weight loss, fever, yeast infections, pneumonia (pneuomocystis carnii) Suffer from opportunistic infections caused by pathogens that are always present but we normally fight them off (e. g. yeast infections, herpes, etc. ) Rapid increase in # of new cases. 66,464 cases reported to centre for disease control (usa) 37,535 had died: 56% of all cases, > 80% of patients diagnosed before 1985! Pathogen (e. g. virus or bacterium) enters body. Proteins on pathogen surface bind to proteins on surface of a class of white blood cells: t lymphocytes ( t cells ; mature in thymus gland)
