Unifying principles that guide our understanding of life. Chapter 1. 1 introduction: cells are the simplest unit of life. Life starts with a single cell: living organisms use energy. Make own energy (plant), consume energy (animals: living organisms interact with their environment. Interact and adapt to environment they live in: living organisms have mechanisms that maintain homeostasis. Fish, lizard, snakes develop mechanisms to conserve energy. Developing winter coats: living organisms need to grow, develop, reproduce. Don"t live forever therefore we need to grow and reproduce: the genetic material, dna, provides a dynamic plan for sustaining life. Transmitting plans for our body (how things should function) Unique to each person: populations of organisms evolve from one generation to the next. Need to accumulate changes: all life is related by an evolutionary history. All plans, bacteria, came from single ancestor: organisms follow the laws of chemistry and physics, and structure determines function.
