In late 1800s, scientists thought a chem substance exists w/in cells that"s responsible for transmission of traits. Researchers were convinced chromosomes- hereditary material (colour body: observed to dbl/divide during cell division, found to contain dna & protein. In 1920s-40s, scientists expected that protein would be the genetic information. Griffith"s bacterial transformation- late 1920s; 2 strains of bacterium: smooth- secrete polysaccharide capsule & look smooth on petri dish. Capsule prevents mouse"s immune system from killing the bacteria. Killed strain w/ heat: rough- didn"t secrete capsules & rough on petri dish. Unable to cause infection in mice: mixed dead heat-shocked s w/ live r; mouse died. Somehow the dead s bacteria transformed r into infection. Transformation- bacteria acquired information to make capsule from heat-killed cells; proliferated & killed the mouse.
