22 views2 pages

Document Summary

Smallest functional units of matter that form all chemical substances. Cannot be further broken down into other substances by ordinary chemical or physical means. Each speci c type of atom is a chemical element. Thee subatomic particles: protons: positive, found in nucleus, same number as electrons, de nes the periodic table, neutrons: neutral found in nucleus, number can vary, electrons: negative, found in orbitals, same number as protons. Atomic nucleus: centre of the atom where protons and neutrons are con ned. Areas in which the probability of nding an electron is high. P orbitals are propeller- or dumbbell shape. Each orbital can hold only 2 electrons: atoms with more than 2 electors have more than 1 orbital. Atoms with progressively more electors have orbitals within electors shells. Are at greater distances from the centre of the nucleus: 1st shell is 1s, 2nd shell is 2s and 2p. An atoms electrons vary in the amount of energy they possess.
