Document Summary

Notes taken from biol 1f90 lecture and pp from dr. bruce. Atoms: smallest functional units of matter that form all chemical substances, cannot be further broken down into other substances by ordinary chemical or physical means, each specific type of atom is a chemical element, three subatomic particles. Protons: positive, found in nucleus, same number as electrons, used to distinguish atomic number. Atomic number: the number of protons in an atom. Neutrons: neutral, found in nucleus, number can vary. Electrons: negative, found in orbitals, same number as protons. Atomic nucleus: centre of the atom where protons and neutrons are confined: entire atom has no net electric charge. The differences of mass are due to particle size. , Proton & neutron are heavy due to their large size and their make up of quarks while electrons are very tiny and are singular particles. Quarks are affected by a strong nuclear force which holds the protons and neutrons together in the atomic nucleus.
