(former) kingdom protista was not monophyletic and there is now much taxonomic revision occuring. Terms to know: protozoan, algae diatom, macrolage, plankton, periphyton, mucilage, amoeba, agellate, choano agellate. Eukaryotes that are not classi ed in the plant, animal, or fungal kingdoms, though some protists are closely related to plants or animals or fungi. Most of them in microscopic in size. Fungus-like: resemble fungi in body form and absorptive nutrition. Particularly common and diverse in oceans, lakes, wetlands and rivers. Occur primary as single cells, colonies or short laments. Cilia: shorter and more abundant than agella. At one time, protists were in a single kingdom. Trichomonas vaginalis ( ve to eight million cases per year in north america) Cardia lamblia (20,000 cases per year in north america) Modern protists most related to the common ancestor of animals.
