Study of the cell cycle in saccharomyces provided a basic understanding of normal and aberrant (cancer) cell cycle in humans. * molecular mechanism of recombination developed in studies on ustilago maydis. One gene, one enzyme hypothesis derived from studies on neurospora crassa. Studied the genetic control of mitosis in saccharomyces cerevisiae. Recovered mutant strains that could grow at 22oc but not at 36oc: temperature sensitive. Studied the genetic control of biochemical reactions in neurospora crassa. Recovered mutant strains that could not grow without nutritional supplementation. Auxotroph , mutant that has lost the capability of synthesizing required compound. Haploid nuclear state: recovery of recessive mutant alleles.
