Document Summary

Lecture 1 - cardiac physiology: general cardiovascular anatomy, cardiac muscle anatomy, contraction of cardiac muscle, excitation-contraction coupling. Cardiovascular system: series of tubes filled with blood, connected to a pump, pressure generated in the heart propels the blood through the system. Left side pumps blood to the entire body, need higher pressure. Blood flow in and out of chambers: flow of blood can only go one way in the heart, valves between the chambers of the heart, there are 4 valves. Tricuspid valve: between the right atrium and right ventricle, three cusps ( tri ) Mitral valve: between the left atrium and left ventricle, two cusps, also known as the bicuspid valve. Pulmonary valve: between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk, three cusps. Aortic valve: between the left ventricle and the aorta, three cusps. Blood vessels representing the flow of deoxygenated blood are blue. Blood vessels representing the flow of oxygenated blood are red.
