Bioelements- chemical elements that cycle through living organisms. Global nutrient cycles: summation of local events occurring in different biotic. Gaseous: main pools of nutrients are the atmosphere and the oceans. Sedimentary: main pool of nutrients is the soil, ricks, and minerals. Example of a local phosphorus cycle in a lake. We can see that both pp and decomposition affect rate of nutrient cycling. Age = change in succession = change in nutrient uptake. Recycling of nutrients in forests is highly variable also dependant on climate. Warmer: little n in litter, all in wood. Gondwanaland (australia, s. america and india): very old, poor soils. Major point: trees of australia (mainly eucalyptus) have as much nutrients as temperate trees. Where a: nutrient productivity (production/unit nutrient in plant) L: nutrient requirement per unit of plant biomass. Predict 3 models of nutrient efficiency and productivity o. Model a: no relation between productivity and amount of nutrient (higher nue at low)
