Document Summary

Every child possesses a unique combination of abilities and problems, interests and fears, successes and failures. In canadian society, special education is based on ideas about normative and non-normative development. Milestones like walking, are based off averages, some people walk early or late and this becomes warning signs. Educators are taught to expect variation in their students. To expect a pattern of strengths and weaknesses that is reflective of individual differences. However, some learning styles/processes fall outside this range of normal expectations. Those students who fall outside the normal range are seen to need special education (gifted programs, supplemental programs, additional assistance) There is an area of research that focuses on the study of exceptionality. Within that area one approach is disability studies. Addresses exceptionality in its social and political settings. Main focus is the dynamic interaction between bodily impairments, people"s social and physical environments, and the factors that influence the participation of people with disabilities in society.
