Week 10 - we don"t need no education: schooling, surveillance & resistance. How are we under surveillance: government (counts every death, and every birth) Parents, teachers: credit cards, debit, campus security, google, fb. How do we put others under surveillance: bus, hallway, street, elevators, waiting rooms. School rules: academic policies, harassment policies, dress code policies. How bodies are regulated, trained, made docile. Threat of perpetual surveillance creates good behaviour. We act as though we are being watched. Power over bodies to ensure healthy, strong population: Common rules of dress: no winter jackets, non-religious headgear, hoods, beachwear or other distracting" clothing, gang wear/colours. Common rules of dress: no ripped/torn clothing, clothing promoting sex or alcohol/drugs, no jewelry that could be a religious symbol, extreme subcultural styles. Line between celebrating diversity and instilling a shared ethos. Justifications: shared common identity, symbols may be offensive, symbols may be oppressive, symbols may be disruptive.
