A method of fieldwork: interviewing, po, document collecting, filming, recording. The way we give and receive information. The way we dress, cars we drive, the music we like. All people have a capacity to classify experiences, encode meanings symbolically (language) Acquired through learning: socialization and enculturation. Manifest meaning: one that is surface and apparent. Latent meaning: suggestive, connotative sub-textual, associations with it, context its in & the meanings the context has for it. Geertz: thick description: thick description: explain behavior with as much detail as possible, human actions can mean many different things, the interpretation of cultures, cocks = represented the men. Become familiar with the people being studied: start at the library, look for referrals, look for argot (specialized language) Field notes: narrative accounts of what goes on in the lives of study subjects, verbal exchanges explicit, implicit, practices rituals, norms, connections relational, values, sequence of events, social structures groups, marginalized.
